  • Karen

Hi! My name is Karen and I live in Gilroy, California. I received my implant in July of 2018. Before Inspire, I was diagnosed with a mild cognitive impairment and I had to take a pill every day to stay awake. I had nasal turbinate reduction and used CPAP and BI-PAP for 2 years but was not getting symptom relief. After Inspire, my sleep apnea is being treated successfully and I have a new appreciation for life. My memory has drastically improved. I don’t fall asleep unintentionally during the day and I’m back to working full time and living life to the fullest!

Interests: I’m interested in plant based nutrition and enjoy Zentangle which is a meditative art. I am getting certified to be a Zentangle teacher in the Spring of 2020. I would have never been able to do this before Inspire.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea: I was not getting better using CPAP or BI-PAP. My mild cognitive impairment was making it difficult to function both at work and in my personal life.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as: With Inspire I’m living my life instead of just surviving.

Why am I a Patient Ambassador? I have experienced such symptom relief with my Inspire implant that I feel compelled to share my experience with others. I hope that by sharing my story I can give others with sleep apnea hope.

  • Al

Hello, I am Al and I reside in South Carolina. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2001 and struggled with CPAP for 10 years before learning about Inspire. My snoring from OSA not only affected me, but it took a toll on my wife. Inspire is a game changer; I am now 70 and plan to continue working as long as I am healthy and productive. I also enjoy boating and spending time with my grandchildren.

I enjoy spending time with my family, boating, jet skiing, reading history and watching college sports. I am looking forward to teaching my grandson baseball, basketball, and football skills.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

My attempts to adapt to CPAP therapy over a ten-year period were unsuccessful. As a result, I experienced restless nights and fatigue in the mornings and afternoon. Additionally, I disturbed my wife’s sleep, as well as anyone within hearing range of my snoring. I rejected upper throat surgery due to its invasive nature, limited success rate and extended recovery time. Although I was accepted into a clinical trial (STAR Trial), Inspire therapy appeared to be a low risk, logical option.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

Inspire therapy is a remarkable, highly successful, minimally invasive solution to the problems caused by sleep apnea. It is, absolutely, the best solution available for OSA.

Why am I a patient ambassador?

I am very fortunate to have been selected to participate in the Inspire STAR Clinical Trial. My quality of life, including energy and alertness, has greatly improved far beyond my expectations. I have talked with many individuals who have exhausted other options, including multiple surgeries, with negative results. I feel obligated and motivated to share my experiences so others have the opportunity to experience improved life styles and the simple benefits of a good night’s rest.

  • Dan

I am Dan, and I reside in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In February 2020, I will have been implanted with Inspire for 9 years. Before Inspire I used CPAP, but my wife never slept, and I needed 12 hours of sleep to feel like I got 8.

Since Inspire, the biggest change in my life has been feeling energized when I wake up. A big bonus is having my wife sleeping with me again.

I enjoy fishing, hunting, and just being outside. I am an avid sports fan who supports all Wisconsin sports teams. Brewers, Badgers, Bucks and of course the Green Bay Packers. I enjoy doing all these things with my family by my side.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

I chose Inspire therapy because I couldn’t handle the CPAP mask anymore. I tried many different masks to find that none of them were comfortable at all.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

    Life changing!

Why am I a patient ambassador?

I am a patient ambassador because I feel the need to let people know how Inspire therapy has changed my life.

  • Chris

Hi, my name is Chris, and I live in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. After having UPPP surgery with absolutely no benefit, I surrendered to using the CPAP machine. While using CPAP, air constantly leaked from my mask into my eyes, ears, and onto my husband. I received my Inspire over 7 years ago and for the first time in a while, I no longer need naps during the day.

Now that I am living life with Inspire, I sleep much better and feel rested and full of energy when I get up in the morning.

My interests include gardening, woodworking, and spending time with my children and grandchildren.

Why I chose Inspire therapy: I had been using a C-PAP for over seven years. I tried losing weight and also received throat surgery to resolve my sleep apnea, but unfortunately this did not work. C-PAP helped, but I did not want to use it for the rest of my life I NEEDED an alternative!

I would describe Inspire therapy as:

Life changing. I sleep well, I am well rested and full of energy.

  • Denise

Hi, I am Denise from the north hills of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I received my Inspire implant in May of 2014. Before Inspire, I had the “triple p” surgery, which gave me relief for about 25 years. Unfortunately, my sleep apnea returned. I tried CPAP and a dental appliance, but neither worked.

I was struggling to drive home from work because I was afraid of falling asleep at red lights. I missed a lot of family functions because I could not drive the two hours to meet them. Because of Inspire, I am more alert at work and I have energy to do all the things I enjoy, especially playing with my 4 grandsons.

Interests: I enjoy playing with my grandchildren, needlework, gardening and Pittsburgh sports; Steelers, Penguins, Pirates and Pitt basketball and football, as well as Penn State football.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea: I chose Inspire therapy because I had nowhere else to turn. I have had sleep apnea for over 20 years. Back then I had extensive surgery to correct the problem. However, my sleep apnea returned after 10 years. I tried a CPAP but could not tolerate anything on my face. Different masks were tried but none of them seemed to work. I then tried an oral appliance to no avail. I was to the point where I was struggling to stay awake at work. On my way home from work I prayed that I did not have to stop at any red lights. My doctor would no longer allow me to travel 2 hours alone to see my family for fear I would fall asleep during the drive. Every morning I would wake up with a headache and feel as if I never went to bed.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as: A Godsend. I can sleep again. I wake up feeling refreshed, brighter and without a headache. I may even have a dream, which I never had in over 20 years, I can watch my sports teams without falling asleep in the middle of the game, only to wake up to find out the result. I can watch a movie from beginning to end, all in 1 showing.

Why am I a Patient Ambassador? I want to pay it forward to let potential patients know they are not the only one with this problem, that there is another option available to treat their sleep apnea and they no longer have to feel like there is no hope for them.

  • Gerry

Hello, my name is Gerry and I live in Ohio. I have had Inspire for five years.  Before Inspire, I tried CPAP and had UPPP surgery (removal of the soft pallet tissue from the back of my throat). With Inspire, I do not snore as loudly, and I am free to do the things I love without worrying where I am going to plug in a CPAP machine. The most substantial change in my life is that I feel rested and ready to tackle the day!

I enjoy riding my Harley motorcycle, singing karaoke, reading, cruising the internet, movies, music (mostly country), cold beer, and good company.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

I have suffered from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) my whole life. Traditional treatment options have not worked for me. I tried CPAP and had both nasal and UPPP surgery, which is where they cut out the upper soft tissue from the back of your mouth. Inspire therapy has by far been the best option and the only thing that has worked on me.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

The single best option for treatment. It is safe, easy to use, and convenient.

Why am I a patient ambassador?

To tell my story and help people understand that there is a better treatment option for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

  • Ivy

Hi, my name is Ivy and I have been a happy Inspire patient since July 2011. Before Inspire, I was using CPAP, but I still could not drive long distances because I would fall asleep at traffic lights. I am thankful for the wonderful gift of Inspire. Now that I am rested, I enjoy painting, cake decorating, and reupholstering furniture.

I volunteer at church, our hospital auxiliary and within our community. I love to be creative. Painting (not walls) is my favorite, along with sewing, reupholstering, flower arranging, and decorating. I also like to organize and plan for special events.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

I am absolutely blessed to be part of the STAR clinical study. I had real issues with CPAP and was always tired.

In A few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

PERFECT!!! Oh, you wanted words . . .  My sleep is so perfect now. I always wake up rested and remain rested. That never happened before.

Why am I a patient ambassador?

I want the whole world to know the good news – there is hope.

  • James

Hi, my name is James and I live in Aurora, Colorado. I struggled with sleep apnea for over ten years! I couldn’t tolerate CPAP, so my doctor recommended that I use a dental appliance. Unfortunately, chewing became incredibly painful just a few months after use. I went back to CPAP and tried more masks than I can remember. I also had surgery to fix a deviated septum in the hopes that the nasal pillows on the CPAP would work. Luckily, I found Inspire at the right time because I had almost lost all hope.

Anything to do with IT, smart homes, and making my life easier in general. I enjoy riding my motorcycle, working on restoring my truck and spending time with my family. I’m also 100% a Seahawks fan for life!

    Why I chose Inspire:
I had been struggling with sleep apnea for a long time and could never get used to CPAP or the dental appliance. My day to day activities were starting to suffer from my lack of sleep. I would fall asleep while sitting at a stoplight when I was driving home from work at 5 pm. At work, I would often forget simple tasks that I had been doing for years. My wife was getting more concerned as my lack of sleep worsened, but I found Inspire just as I was beginning to lose hope.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire as:
It is a complete solution for those that cannot tolerate CPAP for treating sleep apnea. For me it was a lifesaver.

Why am I a patient ambassador?
I enjoy sharing my patient view with others who are considering Inspire. My life and my family’s lives have been forever changed by Inspire. Plus I have so much energy that I need to apply it somewhere! Sharing my experience feels like the best thing I can do with all that extra energy.

  • Randy

Hello, my name is Randy and I was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. I have had my Inspire implant for over two years and love it! I tried CPAP, struggled to keep the mask on for 6 months, and did not meet the insurance company usage requirement. I felt defeated and lost hope until I heard a story about Inspire.

I enjoy cooking and travel, but most of all I have always liked to help others. Whether it be helping them to move or just providing a ride to the doctors, I have always helped friends and family.

Why I chose Inspire to treat my sleep apnea:
I was feeling defeated when my CPAP was taken back, and I desperately wanted to find a treatment that would work better for me. I heard a story about Inspire and spent a great deal of time speaking to Inspire representatives on the phone to get all my questions answered. Also, the Inspire team helped me gain insurance approval. This was the last option for me so I went for it.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire as:
Inspire gave me my life back. I feel ten years younger. I used to nap after work, fall asleep driving cars, be impatient and frankly cranky all the time.  I had not dreamt in years and now I dream and remember them.  I have more energy, and my overall health has improved greatly.  I am traveling more, with one less piece of luggage.

Why am I a patient ambassador?
I have always loved helping others, and I want to give back and share my great experience. Sleep Apnea is a horrible sleep disorder that many people do not address and I want to help others who are seeking treatment to improve their health.

  • Shawn

Hello, my name is Shawn and I live in Orlando, Florida. I received Inspire in August 2015. Before Inspire, I endured many other surgeries for sleep apnea including UPPP, tonsillectomy, septoplasty, turbinate reduction, hyoid suspension and genioglossus advancement. I also used CPAP and a mandibular advancement device.

For the first time in many years, I feel like a “normal” person because I can go to bed basically like anyone else! Not only do I feel more rested and energetic, but I’ve been able to travel more.

Interests: I love to travel, and do so fairly often. I also enjoy reading (both current fiction and “classics”), doing home improvement projects, and watching my Tampa Bay Buccaneers play.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea: For many years I’ve struggled with severe OSA, which has limited the things I enjoy doing or would like to do, particularly traveling.  Over the years I’ve tried virtually every treatment option available, including CPAP, oral appliances, and a total of six different surgical procedures.  Although I saw some reduction in the severity of my OSA because of the surgeries and appliances, unfortunately there wasn’t enough improvement (particularly in the long term) to be able to eliminate CPAP altogether.  I was unhappy with CPAP for many reasons, from having to lug the machine with me whenever I traveled, to not being able to go certain places or do certain things at all because of my reliance on it.  I always looked at CPAP as a temporary fix, and always hoped that one day I’d find a more permanent OSA treatment that would free me from CPAP once and for all. I learned about Inspire several years ago and eventually discussed it with my ENT, along with another much more invasive robotic surgical procedure.  After getting his professional opinion and weighing the pros and cons of each, I decided to pursue Inspire therapy.  I felt that Inspire was not only more promising in terms of treating my OSA, particularly on a long-term basis, but the surgery and recovery were also much easier and less daunting than the other procedure.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as: Quite literally, life changing.  With Inspire, my AHI dropped from 37 to 2.5 (yes, there’s a decimal point in there), and I’m finally 100% free from CPAP!  I received Inspire in August 2015 and still feel every bit as good today as I did when it was first activated.
