Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

I am absolutely blessed to be part of the STAR clinical study. I had real issues with CPAP and was always tired.

In A few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

PERFECT!!! Oh, you wanted words . . .  My sleep is so perfect now. I always wake up rested and remain rested. That never happened before.

Why am I a patient ambassador?

I want the whole world to know the good news – there is hope.

I live in Cleveland, OH. I have worked for a health insurance company for over 26 years and I am hoping to retire in the next few years. I enjoy spending time with all my family whenever I can.

Interests:

My interests include gardening, woodworking, and spending time with my children and grandchildren.

Why I chose Inspire therapy:
I had been using a C-PAP for over seven years. I tried losing weight and also received throat surgery to resolve my sleep apnea, but unfortunately this did not work. C-PAP helped, but I did not want to use it for the rest of my life I NEEDED an alternative!

I would describe Inspire therapy as:

Life changing. I sleep well, I am well rested and full of energy.

Interests:

I enjoy fishing, hunting, and just being outside. I am an avid sports fan who supports all Wisconsin sports teams. Brewers, Badgers, Bucks and of course the Green Bay Packers. I enjoy doing all these things with my family by my side.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

I chose Inspire therapy because I couldn’t handle the CPAP mask anymore. I tried many different masks to find that none of them were comfortable at all.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

Life changing!

Why am I a patient ambassador?

I am a patient ambassador because I feel the need to let people know how Inspire therapy has changed my life.

Interests:

I have been a youth baseball coach for over 20 seasons. I currently coach a 17U travel team. I am the Quartermaster/Adjutant of VFW Memorial Post 7308 Pleasant Prairie, WI and Adjutant of Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 20, Kenosha, WI.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

I was diagnosed with OSA in 2009 and my doctor recommended an oral appliance. Due to periodontal disease, the appliance was not effective for me. I used a CPAP machine for a while but could only tolerate the mask for a short time after I went to sleep. I would wake up and literally rip it off because I couldn’t stand it. I read a small article in the local paper where they were looking for potential patients who couldn’t tolerate using a CPAP. After some tests and orientation by Froedart Medical College of Wisconsin, it was determined that I was a candidate for the Inspire implant. It was a no-brainer for me to decide without hesitation to get the implant.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

Life changing. The snoring is gone and I get restful sleep now, plus my wife is happy!

Why am I a patient ambassador?

I want to tell people my experience and help them with questions they may have about how the device works.

Brief Bio:

I live in Pittsburgh, PA with my husband whom I’ve been married to for 37 years. We have 2 children and 2 beautiful grandchildren. I am an office manager and biller in a primary care office and I am hoping to retire in a few years.

Interests:

I enjoy playing with my grandchildren, needlework, gardening and Pittsburgh sports; Steelers, Penguins, Pirates and Pitt basketball and football, as well as Penn State football.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

I chose Inspire therapy because I had nowhere else to turn. I have had sleep apnea for over 20 years. Back then I had extensive surgery to correct the problem. However, my sleep apnea returned after 10 years. I tried a CPAP but could not tolerate anything on my face. Different masks were tried but none of them seemed to work. I then tried an oral appliance to no avail. I was to the point where I was struggling to stay awake at work. On my way home from work I prayed that I did not have to stop at any red lights. My doctor would no longer allow me to travel 2 hours alone to see my family for fear I would fall asleep during the drive. Every morning I would wake up with a headache and feel as if I never went to bed.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

A Godsend. I can sleep again. I wake up feeling refreshed, brighter and without a headache. I may even have a dream, which I never had in over 20 years, I can watch my sports teams without falling asleep in the middle of the game, only to wake up to find out the result. I can watch a movie from beginning to end, all in 1 showing.

Why am I a Patient Ambassador?

I want to pay it forward to let potential patients know they are not the only one with this problem, that there is another option available to treat their sleep apnea and they no longer have to feel like there is no hope for them.

Interests:

I enjoy traveling, fishing, solar energy and studying the Bible.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

Ever since my first overseas assignments I slept lightly and was very aware of my surroundings and sounds during the night. Looking back, this may have been my sleep apnea. I woke easily during the night and as a result, I would be tired and restless during the day. After work, I used to go home, eat dinner, and sleep in a chair until it was time to go to bed. I was just too tired to do anything. During the night I would often jolt awake, but could never find the culprit.

In 2012, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. During the next 2½ years I used a CPAP and tried almost every type of mask: small, full face, nose pillows, etc. None of these masks would stay on my face. I adjusted the mask on my face several times each night. I had blisters on my forehead and indentions on my face where the straps went across my jaw and under my chin. Even with using a CPAP, I was tired all day long.

I received Inspire therapy in December 2014, and when it was turned on one month later I was immediately able to sleep. When I wake up each morning, it is time to get up and start my day; I’m ready to go. I don’t feel tired or exhausted and I no longer wake myself up during the night. My wife is able to remain in bed with me and doesn’t need to find another place to sleep.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

It’s perfect for me. My quality of life has been improved beyond anything I could imagine.

Why am I a patient ambassador?

I am a patient ambassador to share what I’m experiencing and pay it forward for those who are having sleep apnea problems.

I am a divorced father with 2 young children. My stepdaughter has also blessed me with 3 grandkids. I live in a small town outside of Columbus, OH but I drive all over the United States as an over-the-road truck driver. I am usually gone during the week and home on the weekends. I like to travel, although most of my traveling involves a trailer load of product making it to a destination on time. My family and friends are very important to me and I have found that family goes beyond "bloodlines" sometimes.

My family and friends are very important to me, and I have found that family goes beyond “bloodlines” sometimes.

Interests:

I enjoy horses and horseback riding, singing karaoke, reading, cruising the internet, movies, music (mostly country), cold beer, and good company.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

I have suffered from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) my whole life. Traditional treatment options have not worked for me. I tried CPAP and had both nasal and UPPP surgery, which is where they cut out the upper soft tissue from the back of your mouth. Inspire therapy has by far been the best option and the only thing that has worked on me.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

The single best option for treatment. It is safe, easy to use, and convenient.

Why am I a patient ambassador?

To tell my story and help people understand that there is a better treatment option for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Brief Bio:

I’m 53 and am a Senior Programmer for a large company in Orlando, Florida. Although I was born and raised in a small town in Upstate New York, I’ve lived in Orlando for over 30 years, so I now consider Florida my home.

Interests:

I love to travel, and do so fairly often. I also enjoy reading (both current fiction and “classics”), doing home improvement projects, and watching my Tampa Bay Buccaneers play.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

For over a decade now, I’ve struggled with severe OSA, which has limited the things I enjoy doing or would like to do, particularly traveling. Over the years I’ve tried virtually every treatment option available, including CPAP, oral appliances, and a total of six different surgical procedures. Although I saw some reduction in the severity of my OSA as a result of the surgeries and appliances, unfortunately, there wasn’t enough improvement (particularly in the long term) to be able to eliminate CPAP altogether. I was unhappy with CPAP for many reasons, from having to lug the machine with me whenever I traveled, to not being able to go certain places or do certain things at all because of my reliance on it. I always looked at CPAP as a “temporary fix,” and always hoped that one day I’d find a more permanent OSA treatment that would free me from CPAP once and for all.

Then while recently doing some online research for other possible treatment approaches, I learned about Inspire, as well as a couple of other pretty intensive surgical procedures. Since these all sounded like good possibilities for me, I eventually discussed these options with my ENT. After getting his professional opinion and weighing the pros and cons of each, I decided to pursue Inspire therapy. I felt that Inspire was not only more promising in terms of treating my OSA, particularly on a long-term basis, but the surgery and recovery were also much easier and less daunting than the other procedures.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

Quite literally, life changing. With Inspire, my AHI dropped from 37 to 2.5 (yes, there’s a decimal point in there), and for the first time in many years I’m totally free from CPAP!

Why am I a Patient Ambassador?

In all my years of researching OSA treatment options, I found the testimonials, and honest, unbiased experiences of actual patients to be the most beneficial resource in helping me decide what avenues to pursue. I thought that being a Patient Ambassador would be a great way to provide others with the type of information and answers that I, myself, often found so valuable.

I founded the Chesterfield Little League in Virginia, one of the most successful Little League programs in the US.

Interests:

I enjoy spending time with my family, boating, jet skiing, reading history and watching college sports. I am looking forward to teaching my grandson baseball, basketball, and football skills.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

My attempts to adapt to CPAP therapy over a ten-year period were unsuccessful. As a result, I experienced restless nights and fatigue in the mornings and afternoon. Additionally, I disturbed my wife’s sleep, as well as anyone within hearing range of my snoring. I rejected upper throat surgery due to its invasive nature, limited success rate and extended recovery time. Although I was accepted into a clinical trial (STAR Trial), Inspire therapy appeared to be a low risk, logical option.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

Inspire therapy is a remarkable, highly successful, minimally invasive solution to the problems caused by sleep apnea. It is, absolutely, the best solution available for OSA.

Why am I a patient ambassador?

I am very fortunate to have been selected to participate in the Inspire STAR Clinical Trial. My quality of life, including energy and alertness, has greatly improved far beyond my expectations. I have talked with many individuals who have exhausted other options, including multiple surgeries, with negative results. I feel obligated and motivated to share my experiences so others have the opportunity to experience improved life styles and the simple benefits of a good night’s rest.

Brief Bio:

I’m an active entrepreneur living in Fredericksburg, VA with 3 young children. I own a consulting firm that specializes in implementing complex systems for large organizations. My job requires extensive travel and long hours with extremely high expectations of performance. I’ve been lucky enough to live and travel around the US and the world but my favorite place is Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.  I lived there for almost 5 years and still own a house there.

I was born in New Jersey and moved to Maryland when I was young. I then went on to The University of Michigan where I majored in Economics. Upon graduation, I moved to Chicago where I lived for 6 years working at Bank of Montreal and attending graduate school at night at The Booth School of Business at The University of Chicago. I returned to the DC area to care for my aging parents and began my consulting career shortly thereafter. My work took me to New York often as well as through Europe and Asia. I moved with my family to Mexico to take advantage of the beautiful weather, kind people and relaxed pace of life. We returned to the US in 2013 when my children were ready for school.

Interests:
I enjoy spending time with my children, reading, golf, and marlin fishing.

Why I chose Inspire therapy to treat my sleep apnea:

I suffered a significant injury to my face and was unable to wear the CPAP mask comfortably. Additionally, my travel schedule was very busy and it was a hassle to travel with a CPAP machine. If I had a lengthy trip I often was unable to take my machine with me due to lack of space. My ENT surgeon recommended the procedure after hearing my story. Once I read the research and benefits, I was confident that it was the correct choice for me and would solve my major problem which was extreme daytime sleepiness.

In a few short words, I would describe Inspire therapy as:

Getting my life back. I am no longer falling asleep or feeling exhausted during the day. I am able to play with my children and perform at the levels I expect of myself at work.

Why am I a patient ambassador?

I would like others who suffer from sleep apnea to receive the same benefits that I have. I consider myself to be extremely lucky to be one of the first to receive Inspire therapy and feel that it is my duty to help educate others. It can be a scary thought to have something implanted and I would like to ease those concerns and show people that there is nothing to worry about and that it does work as advertised.
