Mike Guber often participates in Half Ironman competitions.
The Colorado man swims, bikes and runs more than 70 miles in total as part of these races.
But, for years, he also struggled with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The disorder prevented him from feeling completely rested.
This didn’t change until he started Inspire® therapy and began to have more energy.
“Where I really noticed it was in swimming because it takes more stamina, more breathing,” Guber said. “I was just able to swim longer distances easier when I started getting better sleep.”
Guber’s journey began with a sleep study his doctor recommended. The diagnosis was OSA.
Guber used a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine to treat it at first.
Constant travel for work made the machine difficult to manage and clean, however.
“It sounded like a tornado all night,” Guber said. “It was a pain to travel with, and it was difficult to set up and clean in a hotel. I decided I just couldn’t do it anymore.”
Guber’s wife, Judy, saw an ad for Inspire therapy and convinced him to ask his doctor for more information.
“He didn’t want to wear (CPAP), and I didn’t want him to have a heart attack,” she said.
Guber saw an Inspire-trained doctor and did more research. He decided to see if he qualified.
He later received the implant in the summer of 2021.
Guber and his wife noticed a difference soon after activation a month later.
Judy said she needed to check on him the first few nights because his quiet sleep amazed her.
It didn’t take long before her anxiety went away. Now she can also get needed rest.
“He was also in a better overall mood, and that helped our marriage relationship and our relationship with our kids,” she said.
Guber continues to compete in Half Ironman races and now has more energy to train than he did years ago.
He recently ran a 10K at Disneyland in September 2024.
Guber also enjoys traveling with his wife.
“We love the active lifestyle,” Mike said. “We play a lot of pickleball. We bike ride everywhere, and it’s just easier when you’re not so tired all the time.”
