Overview.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder that occurs when the tongue and other soft tissues of the airway relax during sleep. When the tongue and soft tissues relax and totally obstruct the airway, it prevents fresh air from reaching the lungs despite efforts to breathe. Without fresh air, the oxygen level in the blood decreases. The brain senses a problem and arouses the body from sleep just long enough to open the airway. Regular breathing is restored. However, this cycle of apnea events can continue to repeat multiple times per hour throughout the night.
