Inspire® Upper Airway Stimulation (UAS) therapy

The airway is dynamic structure…OSA is a dynamic condition…Inspire therapy is a dynamic therapy that works with the body's physiology to prevent airway obstruction.

Many people suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are unable or unwilling to make CPAP therapy work. For these CPAP intolerant patients, Inspire has developed implantable Upper Airway Stimulation (UAS) Therapy. Inspire therapy is designed to deliver physiologically-timed, mild stimulation to the hypoglossal nerve on each breathing cycle to prevent airway obstruction during sleep. Early clinical experience suggests that significant decreases in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) can be achieved in properly selected patients.

In contrast to other surgical procedures to treat obstructive sleep apnea, Inspire therapy does not require removing or altering a patient's facial or airway anatomy.

The Inspire System

Mild stimulation is delivered to the hypoglossal nerve on each breathing cycle to prevent airway obstruction. The stimulation is sufficient enough to evoke a response from the nerve but mild enough not to disturb sleep. Patients control therapy start and stop times with a handheld controller.

The pulse generator processes information from the sensor and determines the most beneficial time in the breathing cycle to deliver the stimulation.

The single lead pressure sensor provides real-time breathing cycle data throughout the night.

The Inspire II System is an investigational device and is not currently for sale.
